Winter Travel Campaign

Winter Travel Campaign

Did You Know Loneliness was a Killer?

For people with a learning disability, winter can be a cold and lonely time. It is much harder to get out of the house when dark nights and icy pavements make travelling difficult. Sadly, many people with a learning disability experience bullying on public transport and this further affects their confidence. Most of Mencap Liverpool’s members receive a basic level of benefits – they can’t afford to use taxis. This can result in people being stuck home alone.

Mencap Liverpool want to make sure that people with a learning disability don’t become socially isolated over Christmas and we need your help. We’re asking for donations to help fund the travel costs of our members over the winter months. Just £6 would cover the average taxi fare for a member to travel to one of our social events or to meet up with their befriender (and it would be great if they can afford to get home too). Mencap Liverpool runs at least 5 different social groups and activities each week and we have between 6 and 20 different people attending each one. Most activities are free as we want to make sure they’re accessible to everyone. Any funding left over from this campaign will be put towards travel training workshops, to help members become more confident in using public transport.
