Will you still need me.. When I’m 64?

That’s right, Mencap Liverpool is 64 years old today!

Many parents will know how Mrs. Elsie Murphy felt in Gateacre in 1948 – alone with a nine-year old son who wasn’t allowed to go to school because he had a learning disability. There was no Mencap then, and no one to help her fight.

She was desperate enough by 1950 that she used the local press to contact some other families in similar plight.  On 16th December 1950 they all met, along with a small group from Manchester.  This was the first meeting of parents who formed the organisation we know today as Mencap Liverpool.

64 years later, we’re grateful for those pioneering parents and for everyone who has made Mencap Liverpool the organisation it is today.

We know there are many people living in Liverpool who have a learning disability and need the help and support that Mencap Liverpool provides today.
