Mencap members Big Day Out

Lots of our members and staff attended Mencap’s Big Day Out at Aintree Racecourse on Saturday 17th October. A great time was had by all and here is what the members had to say about the day!

I went to the drama workshop in the morning and we watched a play about a man with a learning disability and what happened to him after his mum died. He had a brother and sister but the brother wasn’t very nice to the sister. In the end the man with the learning disability stood up to his brother and he felt better for doing this. I watched the play with Lewis who also goes to Mencap Liverpool. I enjoyed watching the play but I would have also liked to have  taken part in it.

In the afternoon I helped at Ticket to Ride which I had volunteered on in the summer. I told people what the exhibition was about. I also took part in a table tennis competition along with Laura and Kevin. We came 4th and won a ping pong set that has a net and bats and balls. I am looking forward to trying this out in the office soon. We also got a bag with lots of information and gifts. I really enjoyed the day and I would go again.

I really enjoyed the Big Day Out. I went to the music man workshop and I used a triangle instrument to make music. We sang a song called high, low, middle. I also went to another workshops were we talked about having a learning disability and how w can help people to understand what this means.

At the end I sat by Sarah and a man came and sang lots of different songs. We met lots of people from Mencap, I met Martha and Jan Tregellis. It was really good.

I went to the health workshop with Jenny. I thought it was excellent and interesting. I learnt about healthy eating, exercising and looking after myself.

I went to the changing attitudes workshop in the afternoon. I was interesting, there was a panel of people that spoke and we could ask them questions. I wanted to tell them about the work that I do when I volunteer at a school.

There were hairdressers at the event and I got my hair done in 1950’s style, My friend liked my hairstyle.

I thought it was excellent. It was the first time I had been to Aintree Racecourse. I was nervous and anxious about going somewhere new but I really enjoyed it and I am glad I went.
