Matthew Street Festival 2012 Blog by Brian Stewart
On 26th and 27th August 2012 I attended the annual Matthew Street festival. This is a very popular event and Beatles fans and other people flock to it from all over the world. The main feature of the festival is the 5 outdoor stages which feature a selection of tribute bands, and different genres of music.
On the Sunday I went to the outdoor stage in Derby Square. I saw two bands perform. One was a tribute band to Pearl Jam and the other one was a tribute to Britpop bands of the 90’s, such as Blur, Oasis, Pulp and Ocean Colour Scene.
A new feature of the festival this year was a part of St Johns Gardens called Strawberry Field. This was aimed at families and other people wanting to go somewhere quiet to chill. Giant Beatles puppets walked around the site as well as characters from Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland. There was also face painting and foot stalls to keep the crowds entertained. The weather was lovely that day so a lot of people came out to enjoy the festival.
On the Sunday the weather had changed and unfortunately the outdoor stages had to be cancelled. However the indoor venues were still running live music. I went to the Cavern Pub and saw two bands performing there. The first one was from the USA and the second one was from Argentina. I enjoyed seeing both of them. I took lots of photographs to help remind me of the fantastic time I had.
