How it came about:
In 2017-18, Mencap Liverpool received one of three Innovation Grants from the Money Advice Trust
Our members had been telling us for some time, that they were finding it hard to manage their money. We were seeing lots of people get into financial trouble and so we wanted to do something.
We looked for resources about money, but we found that most information designed for people with a learning disability was aimed at people with more severe learning disability, who had other people to help them look after their bills.
This information didn’t help people who had no support to manage their money.
Using the Innovation grant, we spent a year working with our members and Lisa and Elaine from Raise, to design a series of workshops. The workshop programme was 8 weeks long and it was designed to help people learn about managing their money. We ran the workshops four times to test them and make sure they worked. Two of the members who took part, then volunteered as peer mentors on the following workshop programmes.
As well as the workshops, we designed a set of Easy Read fact sheets. The fact sheets cover the topics included in the workshops:
Budgeting, Banking, Bills, Benefits, Borrowing and saving and Members Top Tips.
The factsheets and workshop materials are freely available for anyone to use. You can download them in sections, using the links below. You’re welcome to use them, but please let us know if you find them useful and please don’t change them without checking with us first.
We think they’ll work well, not just for people with a learning disability, but also people with mental health difficulties, people with lower literacy and numeracy skills and people who have English as a second language.
