Busy, busy, busy…
I’m coming to the end of my second Monday at Mencap Liverpool, and think its safe to say that Monday’s have never gone quite this quickly before!
Last week was loads of fun but I also learnt a lot, which was great. On Thursday I joined cheif exec Sarah in a meeting with national Mencap to discuss the organisation and agenda of our Big Cuts Event. We decided that it would be good if I went along to the Big Cuts Event in Manchester, which is next week, so I could get a better feel of what to expect from our event.
On Friday, volunteer co-ordinator Sophie and I attended a Human Rights and Healthcare conference organised by the British Institute of Human Rights. Those who attended were mainly charity workers from different organisations across Merseyside and the North West, and the aim of the conference was to make us aware of human rights law and legislation, and how we can encourage our members to use it in order to ensure that they are treated fairly and equally, particularly in the healthcare system.
It was a very interesting day, and a real eye opener. We learnt a lot about issues that not only people with a learning disability but other vulnerable groups can face, and the ways that they can be addressed. We also learnt how human rights law can be directly used in the fight against the cuts, so the conference also proved very useful to our campaigns work as well!
Today has been spent mostly getting myself organised, and writing to-do-lists. I have a busy week ahead, but am looking forward to attending my first Mencap Liverpool coffee morning on Friday! Were hoping to raise some money for Comic Relief as well… I’ve got my red nose at the ready!
