Brian’s Blog:Liverpool To Chester Bike Ride 2012

On Sunday 8th July 2012 I took part in the annual Liverpool to Chester Bike Ride. This involved me cycling from Liverpool to Chester and back to Liverpool again, a distance of roughly 50 miles. I did this to raise money for Mencap Liverpool where I am a volunteer. I arrived at the start area at about 8.20am. This gave me time to check everything was fine with my bike and have some water to drink. I had to wait about 5-10 minutes before I was allowed to start cycling, as a lot of people were taking part.

The first part of my journey was through the Birkenhead Tunnel. I had a nice easy downhill section to enjoy before I had to endure the uphill part coming out of the tunnel. The journey to the halfway point was mostly flat, and contained quite a few quiet country lanes and scenic views. I arrived at the halfway point approximately 2 hours later. This was in the grounds of the Countess of Chester Hospital. I was able to enjoy my lunch in the sunshine. About 20 minutes later I started my journey back to Liverpool.

I have completed this particular bike ride about 10 times in total, so I remembered the route fairly well. I followed a steady pace, and although there were a few steep hills to manoeuvre I managed these without much trouble. The final part of the journey was back through the Birkenhead Tunnel. The last half a mile or was all uphill. I crossed the finishing line and was handed a bag which contained an energy drink and energy bar.

I was very proud of my achievement. Not only did I complete the ride in one of my quickest ever times, I also managed to raise about £100 for Mencap Liverpool through online fundraising. In the future I hope to complete many more events and raise even more money.
