Mencap founder to appear on first-class stamp
The founder of Mencap, Judy Fryd, is to appear on a first-class stamp as part of the Royal Mail’s ‘Eminent Britons’ collection.
Fryd was the mother of a son with learning disability and she campaigned to secure the right for every child with a learning disability to receive an education.
She formed the National Association of Parents of Backward Children in 1946, which went on to become Mencap.
Mark Goldring, Mencap’s chief executive, said:
The Judy Fryd stamp is a great tribute to an outstanding individual who changed the attitudes of society towards people with learning disabilities forever. Thanks to Judy’s devotion to campaigning, people with learning disabilities now have a voice in society.
